The Day Master is your chart's reference point
A Saju chart is built from four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is called the Day Master, or 일간 (ilgan).
It is commonly used as the chart's central reference point. When a reader describes what supports, drains, controls or strengthens “you” in the chart, they are often describing how other elements relate to the Day Master.
A Yang Wood Day Master and another Yang Wood Day Master can still have very different charts. Season, surrounding stems and branches, balance and timing all change how that Wood energy is expressed.
There are ten possible Day Masters
The ten Heavenly Stems combine the Five Elements with Yin and Yang: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water and Yin Water.
Why people start with the Day Master
It gives beginners an intuitive entry point. You can first learn whether your central reference is Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water, then explore how that element behaves when it is supported or pressured by the rest of your chart.
What can a Day Master reading tell you?
Used carefully, it can help frame themes such as natural work style, relationship preferences, blind spots and the environments that feel energizing or draining. It is better treated as a traditional interpretive framework than as a fixed psychological diagnosis.
Why birth time still matters
Your Day Master comes from your birth date, but a full Four Pillars chart also uses the Hour Pillar when birth time is known. That extra pillar can add context to the overall balance and interpretation, so a full reading is more complete when accurate birth time information is available.
