A Beginner's Guide to Korean Saju

Saju is Korea's traditional Four Pillars birth-chart system. It uses your birth year, month, day and hour to create a symbolic map of elemental relationships and life themes.

What does “Saju” mean?

Saju (사주) literally refers to the “four pillars” of birth: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar is made of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, creating eight characters in total. This is why the system is also commonly called Saju Palja, or the Four Pillars and Eight Characters.

Is Saju the same as Western astrology?

No. Western astrology is built around planets, signs, houses and astronomical positions. Saju uses the traditional East Asian stem-and-branch calendar, Yin and Yang, and the Five Elements. Both are symbolic systems, but their calculations and interpretive language are different.

The easiest way to start

Learn your Day Master first, then understand how Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water interact around it. This gives you a simple framework before you explore the full chart.

The four pillars

Year Pillar

Often associated with broader social background, ancestry and the outer context around a person.

Month Pillar

Important for season and chart strength. It is often treated as a major structural influence in traditional reading.

Day Pillar

The Day Stem is your Day Master, the central reference point used to interpret many relationships in the chart.

Hour Pillar

When birth time is known, the Hour Pillar adds another layer of detail and completes the classic Four Pillars structure.

What do people use Saju for?

People commonly explore personality, relationships, career tendencies, money patterns, major life themes and timing. A responsible modern reading treats these ideas as cultural and reflective interpretation rather than guaranteed predictions.
